Sharing your stupid winprinter across the network

  View Printable Version
WindowsI have this stupid GDI Printer (aka winprinter) which is connected to a windows machine. Why is the printer stupid?

First of all, the printer itself doesn't understand any standard printer language (like PCL, Postscript, etc.), and this means that it is hard to use this printer from any operating system which the vendor haven't written a driver for. So what if the vendor supports Linux (via a non-opensource driver)? I use FreeBSD.

Second, the Windows printer driver for my printer is made in such a way that it is impossible to use the printer over a network. I can share the printer, but the printer driver will not work with a network printer. How stupid is that?

Fortunately, all is not lost. It is possible to make the printer work.

IIS Lockdown Wizard 2.1

  View Printable Version
WindowsMicrosoft released version 2.1 of their IIS Lockdown Wizard some weeks ago, a tool that turns off unnecessary features on production servers. This is a pretty handy tool to run on your server once all required hotfixes are applied, all example websites are removed and you are ready to roll.

When the wizard is finished, your server will theoretically be a lot more secure than when you started. The wizard can run unattended and has a simplified URLScan tool built in.
The IIS Lockdown Wizard is not meant to make you forget about security. After running the wizard, you will still need to apply hotfixes published by MS.

No MS Office 11 on Windows 9x

  View Printable Version
WindowsMS Office 11 will not work on Windows 98 and Windows Me, according to MS Office beta testers. The reason cited is security and the need to evolve away from the "inherently insecure" Windows 9x codebase. Only Windows 2000 SP3 and Windows XP will be able to run Office 11.

Way to go.
