7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. 7-Zip works in Windows 7 / Vista / XP / 2008 / 2003 / 2000 / NT / ME / 98. There is a port of the command line version to Linux/Unix.
Supported formats:
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
Unpacking only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.

HFS - the HTTP File Server claims it is "the other way to share your files". Works on Windows (all 32-bit versions) and in Wine under Linux. So, file sharing via a web server, open source, free, guaranteed to contain no malware. Cool!

If you want to build a HTPC / mediacenter, but don't feel comfortable with those other operating systems (you know, Linux, BSDs and that stuff) there is always windows. Many solutions on the windows platform is payware, but MediaPortal is free. It requires Windows XP SP2, and has other requirements (check their web), but the price is right

After releasing Windows XP Service Pack 2 in August last year, Microsoft gave everyone a 120 (later 240) day grace period in which the Automatic Update wouldn't automatically download and install it.

If you want to verify the system files on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP installation, get out the installation cd, and run sfc /scannow. This command will verify all system files against those on the cd. Neat. OH, and 'sfc' means System File Checker.
