Solaris: JET as a network boot server

  View Printable Version
NewsAfter setting up my Solaris 10 virtual appliance, I proceeded to install JET. After getting it installed, I had to download a Solaris 10 iso image (for SPARC, as I am going to boot a Blade 1000). Configuring the JET framework (the User Guide is handy) is not entirely straightforward; it wants you to have the "recommended patches" for the OS version you are going to boot / install, and for Solaris 10 that requires a support contract. Simply create /export/install/pkgs and /export/install/patches directories; they are empty, but that doesn't matter if you are only booting from the JET server. When you make your template; only select base_config or you will get error messages later. Edit /etc/dfs/dfstab so that /export/install is shared instead of a subdirectory. Finally do a make_client clientname. It will error out if something is wrong, fix any errors and re-run with the -f flag until there are no more errors.

Solaris 10 in VirtualBox

  View Printable Version
NewsSun^H^H^HOracle has provided an "Appliance Image" for use in VirtualBox, it works with VirtualBox 3.0 or higher. I already had VirtualBox 3.2.4 (OSE) installed on my FreeBSD workstation, so I just downloaded the image (it was the 10/09 version) and got to it. I based my installation on the notes from Getting Started with a Solaris 10 Appliance Image for VirtualBox. After importing the appliance in VirtualBox, nothing happens until you power on the virtual machine. D'Oh! It will ask about networking (I chose DNS and DHCP, selected my DNS domain etc), root password (set it), but it didn't ask about the hostname. Perhaps this is why it becomes "unknown".
